Amrita brings more than 30 years of international experience in choreography, performance, & teaching. She has travelled throughout North & South America, Europe, and Asia offering talks, workshops and performances. Amrita was educated in Santiniketan (Abode of Peace) India, a world renowned institution where art, music and dance was an integral part of education & a way of life. The relationship between nature, spirituality and practicing the arts is integral in her practices and performances.

Amrita has worked with various North American, European, & Indigenous dance & music artists, to create bridges between artistic expressions and choreography. She has collaborated with artistic and cultural organizations like Les Grands Ballet Canadiens, TED talks, The Banff Centre for the Arts, & many international festivals. Her choreographic works have been presented internationally. She performs regularly at festivals, conferences, & for educational institutions.

Amrita uses dance as a powerful tool for inter-cultural dialogue giving voice to the voiceless. Her work also highlights the socio-political, cultural, and spiritual aspects of society focused on marginalized groups/communities, human rights, & women's issues. Her most well known creations related to these issues are, “Sophia's Resurrection”, “Shakti Rising: Honoring our Stories”, “The Bridges of Hope”, & “Celebrating the Human Spirit”.

Amrita works in the field of “Dance & Education” for educational institutions. She also uses dance & movement as a therapeutic tool for healing and well being which she has presents in hospitals, health institutions, and for medical professionals.

Amrita is the founder of Nrityoga®- Yoga of Dance,  a discipline that combines  ancient yoga, sacred dance, and meditation practices which bring healing & well being.

These particular workshops concentrate primarily on wellness of the body, mind and spirit, where union with oneself and the world surrounding us is achieved through the universal language of movement/dance. Through such teachings, Amrita helps her clients/students achieve a greater sense of physical, psychological and emotional balance.

 

Amrita specializes in Odissi classical dance, Rajasthani Gypsy dance, Sacred dance traditions, Folk dance, Bollywood dance, & Modern dance. She is also a Yoga teacher specializing in Mudras (sacred hand gestures), Tantra/Kundalini practices, Pranayama(breathwork), Meditation, & works in the Healing Arts field.

Amrita has performed extensive anthropological research in the Mahari tradition of dance (temple Yogini's of Orissa). She also continued her cultural research into various Indigenous dance and music traditions related to Gypsy & Tribal dance traditions of India( Rajasthan, Punjab, Gujarat, Bengal, etc.). Her work with the Indigenous Kalbeliya people (Nomadic tribes) of Rajasthan was ground breaking for the Canadian dance milieu.  

She has also trained in Irish step dancing, Flamenco, African, Oriental, Latin, Polynesian, Hawaiian and Maori dance traditions.

Amrita holds a degree in Anthropology and has dedicated her life’s work, performance, & research into various aspects of dance. She hopes that through the inter-cultural dialogue of dance, we can continue to reach out and give voice to important issues, bring peace & compassion between all in this world.

She also pursued her dance studies at the Legacy of Arts Institute in Odissi classical dance and in multiple folk/tribal dances around India.

Amrita possède plus de 35 ans d'expérience internationale dans les domaines de la chorégraphie, de la performance et de l'enseignement. Elle a voyagé à travers l'Amérique du Nord et du Sud, l'Europe et l'Asie pour proposer des conférences, des ateliers et des spectacles. Amrita a fait ses études à Patha Bhavana, Santiniketan (la demeure de la paix) en Inde, une institution de renommée mondiale où l'art, la musique et la danse faisaient partie intégrante de l'éducation et du mode de vie. La relation entre la nature, la spiritualité et la pratique des arts fait partie intégrante de ses pratiques et de ses spectacles. Elle a également poursuivi ses études de danse à l'Institut Legacy of Arts en danse classique Odissi et dans de nombreuses danses folkloriques/tribales de l'Inde.

Amrita utilise la danse comme un outil puissant pour le dialogue interculturel en donnant une voix à ceux qui n'en ont pas. Son travail met également en lumière les aspects sociopolitiques, culturels et spirituels de la société, en se concentrant sur les groupes et communautés marginalisés, les droits de l'homme et les questions relatives aux femmes. Ses créations les plus connues dans ce domaine sont « La résurrection de Sophia », »Shakti Rising : Honorer nos histoires », “Les ponts de l'espoir”, & “Célébrer l'esprit humain”, “La terre parle”, et “Kali dans mes os”.

 

Amrita travaille dans le domaine de la danse et de l'éducation pour des institutions éducatives. Elle utilise également la danse et le mouvement comme outil thérapeutique pour la guérison et le bien-être dans les hôpitaux et les établissements de santé.

 

Amrita est la fondatrice de Nrityoga® - Yoga of Dance, une discipline qui combine le yoga ancien, la danse sacrée et des pratiques de méditation qui apportent guérison et bien-être.

 

Amrita est spécialisée dans la danse classique Odissi, la danse tsigane Rajasthani, les traditions de danse sacrée, la danse folklorique, la danse Bollywood et la danse moderne. Elle est également professeur de yoga, spécialisée dans les Mudras (gestes sacrés des mains), les pratiques Tantra/Kundalini, le Pranayama (travail sur la respiration), la méditation, l'anatomie énergétique, et travaille dans le domaine des arts de la guérison.


Amrita a effectué des recherches culturelles sur la tradition de la danse Mahari (temple Yogini d'Orissa). Guru Chittaranjan Achareya et Sashimani Mahari ont ouvert la voie à son travail et à sa formation en danse Odissi.

Elle a également poursuivi ses recherches culturelles sur diverses traditions de danse et de musique indigènes liées aux traditions de danse tsiganes et tribales de l'Inde (Rajasthan, Punjab, Gujarat, Bengale, etc.). Son travail avec le peuple autochtone Kalbeliya du Rajasthan (Suwa Devi Kalbeliya et Gulabo Sapera) a constitué une percée dans le milieu de la danse au Canada.  

Elle s'est également formée à la danse irlandaise, au flamenco, aux danses africaines, orientales, latines, polynésiennes, hawaïennes et maories.

Amrita est diplômée en anthropologie et a consacré ses recherches aux formes de danse originaires du sous-continent indien. Elle espère qu'à travers le dialogue interculturel de la danse, nous pourrons continuer à tendre la main et à donner une voix aux questions importantes, à apporter la paix et la compassion entre tous dans ce monde.
